Obituary for William A. Hasenauer William A. “Bill” Hasenauer, 89, called it a day on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at Rome Memorial Hospital. Bill was born on July 29, 1929, in Utica, the son of Joseph and Mable (Cooper) Hasenauer. He was a graduate of UFA and the Police Academy.
On February 14, 1981, Bill married Elizabeth Weaver in the Presbyterian Church, Utica. He began his law enforcement career in the Oriskany Police Department where he became the Chief of Police. Bill later moved on to the Sheriff’s Office, working through the ranks to the capacity of Undersheriff.
He was appointed by the governor, to the office of Sheriff, in 1973. Bill held that esteemed position for 17 years until his retirement in 1990, rounding out a total of 35 years in law enforcement. He was instrumental in implementing the 911 Emergency System in Oneida County.
Bill also served as the Forestport Town Supervisor for 10 years. He is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth. Bill was predeceased by his former wife, Phyllis Disburger and with that union they had five children.
His surviving children are Beth Ann (Chuck) Parmiter, Billie Lynn Hasenauer, Laura Jean (Tom Pendleton) Hasenauer, John Arthur (JoAnn) Hasenauer, and Joseph Steven (Melissa) Hasenauer; grandchildren, Rachel (Edwin Thrower) Hasenauer, Sarah and Ethan Hasenauer; step children, Franklin Robertelli, Lisa Beaton and Luis (Lyn) Robertelli; a great grandson, 5 step grandchildren and 1 step great grandchild; sister, Carol Elmer along with many nieces and nephews. Bill also leaves behind his canine companions, Lady Bella and Lexi. He was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Clayton Elmer.
Law enforcement and elected officials are welcome to call on Tuesday, October 9, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at Surridge & Roberts Funeral Home, 470 French Rd. , Utica. Relatives and friends are invited and may call from 12 – 2 p.m. Funeral services will commence at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Bill’s name may be made to NYS Sheriffs’ Assoc. , Sheriffs’ Summer Camp. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Bill’s family would like to thank the 2nd floor staff and ICU at Rome Memorial Hospital for the care and compassion shown during his time with them. They also want to thank all of their friends on Lone Pine Drive as well as the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.
