Ted L.’s Obituary Ted L. Mitchell, 85, of Stroud Township, passed away Thursday morning, February 14, 2019, while under hospice care at home. He was the husband of Audrey A. (Albert) Mitchell. Born on June 21, 1933 in Carbondale, he was the son of the late William C. and Marie (Ferrel) Mitchell.
Ted’s father worked for Williams Baking Company and was transferred many times. They lived in Scranton, Sunbury, Forty Fort and finally settled here, in Stroudsburg after Williams closed. He was a graduate of Forty Fort High School and attended Wyoming Seminary.
Ted was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1955 and came to Stroudsburg to work with his father who had opened Mitchell’s Market. He met his wife, Audrey Albert when she and her parents stopped to shop at the market one evening. They married October 6, 1957 and it was a love that lasted 61 years.
Ted and his father co-owned the store until his dad retired in 1979 and then he and Audrey continued the business until 1997. Their daughter, Lynda and son in law, Floyd “Chip” Williams worked with them until the closing. Ted loved his neighborhood and always helped his neighbors by mowing lawns, snow blowing driveways, and anything he could do to help.
Audrey felt a sign should have hung at their home saying “Ye olde Bicycle Shop” as he fixed many bikes for the neighborhood children. He would also inflate tires or basketballs when they needed air; and loved to show children his train collection and layout, as he was an avid train collector. His good friend, Glenn Detrick, introduced Ted to snowmobiling which he enjoyed for many years, especially family trips to Old Forge, NY.
Ted was a member of the Stroudsburg United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge #325 F&AM, Elks Lodge #319, Train Collectors Association, and Irem Temple. In addition to his wife, Audrey, he is survived by two daughters, Lee Anne Sebring and husband Dan of Winter Garden, FL and Lynda Williams and husband Floyd “Chip” of Stroudsburg; three grandchildren, Taylor Sebring of Winter Garden, FL, and Audra and Adam Williams both of Stroudsburg; a sister, Sue Carol Gartner and husband Gerhard; and many nieces and nephews. He was especially close to his nephew, Ken S. Small.
Ted was so proud of his family and loved them all dearly. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Sally Small and her husband Ken Small, two brothers in law, Harold S. Albert and Charles “Barry” Albert and their wives Pauline Albert and Virginia Albert; and his parents in law, Harold E. and Gertrude (Von Broock) Albert. “The best portion of a good man’s life”: his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love” Services will be held on Tuesday, February 19, at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg; with viewing beginning at 1:00PM followed by the memorial service at 3:00PM with Pastor Dave Berryman officiating.
Private cremation will follow with interment at a later date at Laurelwood Cemetery in Stroudsburg. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the charity of ones choice. The family would like to thank all of their caring friends, neighbors and hospice nurse, Natasha who were so supportive during Ted’s illness.
Their kindness will be long remembered.
