Vallerie (Niamtu) Hutsell passed away peacefully after a brief illness July 15, 2018. Born in Canton, Ohio on October 16, 1925 to Elena and Joseph Niamtu, Vallerie was a first generation American. Her parents emigrated from Romania around 1920, and were very proud of their hard earned American citizenship.

Vallerie and her siblings learned pride of country, honesty, and a hard work ethic from them. Val reminisced fondly what a wonderful cook her mother was, and gained her love of cooking from her. Val graduated from Timken Vocational High School in 1943 from the school of Cosmetology, and started her career as a beautician at The Parisian in Canton.

She worked there while her sweetheart, US. Navy Seaman Michael Hutsell of Massillon, was away fighting in WW II. They were married upon his return from the war on June 10, 1947.

Together she and Mike worked and saved until they could open their own salon in Massillon called Monique. It was a busy shop across from the Massillon Library, and she and Mike grew the business to having 5 stylists. They sold her salon after 5 years when she and Mike started their family.

However, she later returned to the work place to teach at Massillon Beauty School after the birth of her children. Vallerie led a full and active life. She and husband, Michael, loved to travel and shop!

As a couple they enjoyed entertaining and were considered wonderful hosts of barbeques and family gatherings. Mike and Val were happily married 63 years. For over 50 years she was an active member of the Massillon Woman’s Club and volunteer at Massillon Community Hospital (Affinity Medical Center).

Never afraid of hard work, she assisted in many fund raising efforts to help both of these organizations grow and prosper. She loved to cook and made delicious Romanian meals that celebrated her heritage. Vallerie was a loving, and kind daughter, sister, mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Michael, and her sister Helen Chapanar. She is survived by sons Michael of Cleveland and Randall of Canton, sister Margaret Comsia, brother Joseph Niamtu, Jr., grandchildren Jeana Hutsell of Canton, Ryan Hutsell of Denver, Colorado and her beloved nieces and nephews. “When the Lord calls you home there is no grief, no pain, no sighing, only Eternal Life ever after”.

The funeral will take place on Saturday, July 21st at 11:00 am at the Paquelet & Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at North Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.
