Verna M. Tidwell, 80, of Cape Girardeau, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at Saint Francis Medical Center. She was born January 15, 1939 in Cape Girardeau County to the late John and Annie (Engelmann) Ates. Verna married Joe Tidwell January 17, 1959 in Cape Girardeau.

They had one daughter, Linda Tidwell. He preceded her in death on October 18, 2003. Verna was a 1956 graduate of College High School and worked at Southeast Hospital and Orthopaedic Associates for 30 years, retiring in 1998.

She was a longtime member of Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Church and served on various committees, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent. She was a former member of the American Association of Medical Assistants. Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Lester and Laverne Ates; four sisters, Alene Hale, Elsie Surina, Ruth Diemund and Eula Jones. Visitation will be Sunday, March 31, 2019 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel.

Funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Pastor Fred Burgard officiating. Entombment will follow at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be given to Hobbs Chapel Cemetery Fund.
