Obituary of William Monahan William “Bill” Monahan passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, April 27, 2018 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Middletown, NY. He was 88 years old. Son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth Monahan, he was born January 20, 1930 in Manhattan, NY.

Bill lived in Nanuet, NY, then moved to New City, NY when he married Joan Martin Monahan in 1972. When Bill retired from the US Postal Service, they soon moved to Port Charlotte, FL and enjoyed the snowbird life, traveling between Florida and Pennsylvania. In 2013, Bill moved to Highland Falls to be closer to his daughter and his grandchildren.

He made many friends in the village and was known as the guy who purchased Take 5 scratch off tickets! Bill did love his lottery tickets! Bill was a dedicated volunteer firefighter with over 60 years with the Nanuet Fire Department.

During Bill’s active time with the Nanuet Fire Department, he attended every parade and could always be found carrying the department banner. He was proud to tell anyone who would listen that his daughter and her family were all volunteer firefighters, and that he couldn’t be prouder of them for carrying on the family tradition. He was always wearing his large collection of fire department t-shirts and could tell you a story about each one.

Survivors include his daughter Frances Galu and her husband Jerry of Highland Falls, his grandson, James Galu and his wife Olivia of Fishkill, NY, grandson Bill Monahan of Casenovia, NY, grandson James Monahan and wife Mary of Goshen, NY, granddaughter Katherine Monahan of Goshen, NY, daughter-in-law Andrea Sciarrino of Goshen, NY, brother Robert Monahan and his wife Rosemarie of southern PA, three great grandchildren, his goddaughters Rosanne Torpey of Maryland and Amy Tremper of South Carolina and many nieces and nephews. Bill is predeceased by his parents, his wife Joan Martin Monahan; his son William Monahan; and his siblings Grace, Thomas and John Monahan. Visitation will be held from 11 am to 1 pm on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at William F. Hogan Funeral Home, 135 Main Street, Highland Falls, NY.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 1:30 pm on Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church, 353 Main Street, Highland Falls, NY. Cremation will take place at Cedar Hill Crematory, Middle Hope, NY. Interment of cremains will be in Germonds Cemetery, Bardonia, NY at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s name to the Nanuet Fire Department.
