Zuleika Stanger Griffin January 21, 1921 – February 25, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Zuleika Stanger Griffin passed away on February 25, 2019, at the age of 98. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Fred Griffin, Sr.; their infant son, David Griffin; her sister, Ruth Lauzon; her brother, Russell Stanger, Jr.; and her beloved daughter-in-law, Lisa Griffin. Zuleika’s family is grateful for her life and many wonderful memories of her.

Survivors include her children and grandchildren, Dr. Fred Griffin Jr., Margaret Griffin Baze (Bob), David Griffin, Will Griffin, Elizabeth Baze Berzin (Edward) and Benjamin Baze (Cia). Zuleika had six great-grandchildren: Isabelle, Benjamin, Jacqueline, and Samantha Berzin, and Roy and Charles Baze; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Zuleika was born January 21, 1921 to Cecile and Russell Stanger in Angleton, Texas and grew up on the family’s cattle ranch on Bailey’s Prairie.

She was proud to have descended from the Old 300, the original Stephen F. Austin colony of Texas settlers. Zuleika graduated from the University of Texas, where she served as the president of the Alpha Phi Sorority. In 1945 she married her college sweetheart, Fred Griffin.

They moved to Lufkin in 1947 where they remained for the rest of their lives. In her younger years, Zuleika was active in Girl Scouts, St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and several local clubs and service organizations. There will be a reception for family and friends Saturday, March 2, 2019 beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall of Christ Congregational Church (105 Saddle Creek Drive).

The funeral service will begin in the church at 1:00 p.m. The Reverend Ralph Morgan, Rector of St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church, will conduct the service. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Pallbearers are Will Griffin, David Griffin, Benjamin Baze, Edward Berzin, Parry Lauzon, Jr., and Russell Stanger III.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations in Zuleika’s memory be made to St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church, 919 South John Redditt Drive, Lufkin, Texas 75904. Memories and condolences may be added at www. carrowayfuneralhome.com.
