Agathia’s Obituary Agathia Vanetta (Hawkins) Chester, 68, affectionately known to all as “Gaye”, peacefully transitioned from this world to eternal rest at Hubbard Hospice House West, on Sunday, February 17, 2019. She grew up in Ebenezer Baptist Church and attended Ferguson Memorial Baptist Church for many years. In 1983 Gaye married David Chester, and to this union, two children were born, Dana and DJ.

Gaye graduated from South Charleston High School and attended Glenville State College. She was employed at Columbia Gas Company where she retired after 39 years of dedicated service. No one was funnier than Gaye.

She could walk into a room and bring life to it by her presence. Memories of her wit and the joy that she brought to so many will live on. She was caring and compassionate, selfishly extending herself whenever needed.

She loved her precious dog, Lola. She valued family and delighted in spending time traveling with her family and friends. Gaye was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Corintha Hawkins; sister, Cynthia Hawkins-Petties; and brother, Alan Hawkins.

She is survived by her daughter, Dana Chester of Kanawha County; son, DJ of Cross Lanes; sister, Alvita Hawkins of South Charleston; a special sister, Trula Wilson of South Charleston; and many other relatives who loved her dearly. A celebration of her life service will be held at 1p.m., Saturday, February 23, at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1530 Third Avenue, Charleston. The burial will follow immediately after in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Friends may visit one hour prior to service Saturday at the church.
