Albert’s Obituary Albert Orin Halstead passed away peacefully today at the age of 97 surrounded by his loving family. He was a native of Syracuse, NY and most recently of Liverpool, NY. He is a retired Vice President of Crouse-Hinds Company in Syracuse.
He joined the company in 1941, prior to his European service with the U. S. Army in World War II, serving as a sergeant in the Signal Corps from 1942 to1945. After returning he earned a degree in Business Administration at Syracuse University while becoming active in the community. While at Crouse-Hinds, where he spent 42 years, he began his career in the Stock Room as a stock clerk, rising from there to the accounting department, purchasing department, assistant to the president, budget director, manager of management services, manager of production planning, director of manufacturing and then Vice President in various capacities, retiring as Vice President of Community and Governmental Affairs in 1984.
Mr. Halstead was President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) from 1951-1953 and Syracuse’s “Young Man of the Year” in 1952. In 1954 he was acknowledged as one of the five Outstanding Young Men in the State of New York. Mr. Halstead was also directly involved in government, serving as Councilman-at-Large on the Syracuse Common Council from 1956 to 1960.
In the past Mr. Halstead served as President, Treasurer and Director of the Onondaga Workshop for the Handicapped and has been a Director of the Urban League, Dunbar Center, National Citizens for Highway Safety, Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce, Syracuse Symphony, Junior Achievement, the United Way, the United Negro College Fund, Friends of the Burnet Park Zoo, Citizens Foundation, Onondaga County Solid Waste Disposal Authority, Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Manufacturers Association of Central New York, and the Hospital Executive Council. For 15 years he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Community-General Hospital, having served on that Board for 25 years. He also served on the Boards of the Health Services Association of Central New York, Onondaga Community College Foundation, and Iroquois Nursing Home.
He served on the Board of Woodlawn Cemetery, and is an Honorary Director on the Board of the Syracuse Chiefs baseball team, where he served for many years. Mr. Halstead has been very active in his church, the Liverpool First United Methodist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees and many other committees of the church, as well as managing for a number of years the LUMC Office Building next to and owned by the church. He was an associate member of the Cavalry Club of Manlius, NY since 1948 and a charter member of the golf course since 1967.
His family was very important to him, and he was a wonderful Grandpa and Great Grandpa. Mr. Halstead is survived by his wife of 30 years, Barbara, his children, Albert (Ann Marie) Halstead of Waverly; Jeanine (Michael) Weaver of Marshfield, MA; Thomas (Sandra) Halstead of Skaneateles; he was pre-deceased by his daughter Patricia in 2017. He is survived by his stepchildren Bonnie (Gordon) Sakow of Newburgh; he was pre-deceased by his stepson Robert VanMarter in 2018 and is survived by stepdaughter-in-law Erin VanMarter of Liverpool.
His 12 grandchildren are: Mark (Erin) and Alyssa Weaver; Anthony Grenga; Danielle (Jeffrey) Watkins; Madelyn & Thomas Halstead; Kathryn (Alan) Wilson; Matthew, Melissa & Amanda Sakow; and Andrew & Mark VanMarter; seven great grandchildren—Evan, Sofia, Luciano, Helena, Owen, Noah and Aayla; and a niece, Cheryl Pede. Mr. Halstead’s first wife of 42 years, Jeanette, passed away in 1987. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, February 13 from 4 to 7 pm at the Maurer Funeral Home, 300 Second Street, Liverpool.
Funeral Service will be on Thursday, February 14 at 11:00 am in the Liverpool First United Methodist Church, 604 Oswego Street, with burial to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Syracuse. Contributions may be made to Liverpool First United Methodist Church, 604 Oswego Street, Liverpool, NY 13088.
