Born on March 10, 1940, she grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, the daughter of Mary Catherine Stewart Griffin and John Davis Griffin. Following her graduation from Harding High School in 1958 she attended Lees-McRae College, where she trained as a medical secretary, graduating in 1960. She completed an internship for Duke University Hospital in North Carolina, 1961-1962.
She then worked for Hawthorne Medical in Charlotte, and later for the Coastal Center, Trident Medical Center and for a number of prominent local physicians in and around Summerville. She resided in Summerville with her devoted husband for most of her life. She married Cecil Benton Threadgill, Jr. on January 25, 1969, at Ebenezer ARP in their hometown of Charlotte.
She was at his side for nearly 50 years, through his career in commercial fire protection that culminated in his partnership as a co-owner of Coastal Sprinkler Company, from which he retired in 2014. Together they raised two daughters, Catherine Elizabeth Threadgill of Summerville and Leigh Ann Threadgill Vallejo of Lexington, South Carolina. The home she made for them in Summerville is and forever will be known for its open doors, delicious home-cooked meals ample enough to feed an army, and generous hospitality.
Friends and family were always welcomed with a glass of sweet tea and a plate of food whether they wanted it or not. She valued her time with her friends from Bunco and Knitty-Knotty and shared her husband’s enjoyment of Palmetto Classic Thunderbird Club. She and her husband were also original members of the Classic Chevy Club of Charleston.
She loved natural beauty and saw it everywhere. She will forever be cherished and remembered by her husband, Benton; her daughters, Catherine and Leigh Ann; her son-in-law, Fred Vallejo; her two grandchildren, Christian and Hannah Vallejo; her brother and sister-in-law, David and Lorraine Griffin, and their children Christopher, Matthew, and Natalie; her beloved cousin, Dr. Fred Gray of Denver, CO; her sister-in-law, Janet Threadgill Robinson and her daughter Krystle Robinson Reynolds; and by countless others. Her family extends their gratitude to her caregivers and all of the staff at Charleston Cancer Center, including Drs.
Charles Graham and Douglas Michaelson; and to Dr. Gerald Warren of Summerville Surgical Associates. A memorial message may be written to the family by visiting our website at www. jamesadyal.com.
