August “Augie” Caruso, 79, of Iron Mountain passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at his home. Augie was born Sept. 30, 1939 in Iron Mountain, son of the late John and Ann (Gregory) Caruso.

He was a 1958 graduate of Iron Mountain High School and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Northern Michigan University. He served his country for 6 years in the Army National Guard. Augie was a music teacher at Iron Mountain High School for 16 years as well as working at Walmart as a greeter and in the photo lab for many years.

He married Cynthia Howorth on August 27, 1994 in Iron Mountain. She preceded him in death in 2015. Augie was a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church and the Elks Club.

He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially weekly poker games with the boys. He is survived by his four children, Lisa Anders of San Diego, Michael Caruso of Las Vegas, Tony (Sandy) Caruso of Jackson, MI and August A. Caruso Jr. of WI; 2 step-children, David (Andrea) Howorth Jr. of Norway, MI and Christine (Matt) Thilhorn of Alanson, MI; a sister-in-law, Barb Caruso; 17 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, John. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10:30am on Friday, April 5 at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. A Memorial Mass will follow at 11:00am at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford.

Father Joseph Gouin will officiate. Burial will be in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park. Condolences may be expressed to the family of Augie Caruso online at www.
