Betty Nellie Chavez April 22, 1945 – May 10, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Upload Photo| Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Betty Nellie Chavez, 74, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, friend and long-time resident of Bluewater Village passed away peacefully on Friday, May 10, 2019 at home with her family by her side. She was born April 22, 1945 to Ordino Chavez and Nellie Chopo Begay. She was born to Tł′o′gi (the Hairy Ones / Weaver-Zia Clan) and born for Ta′bąąha′ (the Water’s Edge Clan).

She was raised in White Point and Sandsprings, New Mexico. Betty was down to earth. She went to Intermountian Indian School at Brigham City, Utah and attended nursing school in Roswell New Mexico.

She worked as a social worker until she retired and dedicated her time to raising her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and working in her yard. Betty was a natural seamstress, creating many beautiful outfits.

She baked wonderful cinnamon rolls and made the best tortillas. She loved traveling and at times she would throw clothes in a bag, jump in the car, drive with no clear direction and camp at any open spots in the mountain. Our beloved mother was known for her faith and devotion to God.

She believed in the power of prayer, the wisdom of God’s holy word and the strength of knowing Jesus Christ as her personal savior. On May 10, 2019 Cancer lost and Heaven won. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her three siblings; Chee Woody, Alice Chavez and Annie Chavez; and by her granddaughter, Gabriella Lopez.

She is survived by her five children, Patty Lopez married to Gilbert Lopez, Sherry Kness married to Erin Kness, Dino Harrison, Raquel Smith married to Robert Smith and Ronalda Baisden married to Jeramiah Baisden; her five grandchildren, Patricia Lopez, Jason Kness, Brittany Lopez, Jamie Kness and Lucas Baisden; and one great-granddaughter, Gabriella Sarracino. A memorial service for Betty will be held at Zion Ministries, 511 W Highway 66, Milan, New Mexico 87021, on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 10:00 a.m., with Pastor Connie Archuleta officiating. A celebration of life reception will follow after the service.
