Obituary for Charles Glenn Henley Charles Glenn Henley, also known as Chuck, Jib, Bull and Poppy, left his earthly home and fell into the loving arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, September 13, 2018, with daughters Kim and Kelly holding his hands. He was a Roane County resident for over 60 years. Chuck was born February 20, 1930, in Tracy City, Tennessee, to Henry Martin Henley and Mary Elizabeth “Geez” Henley.
He was lovingly raised by his family and Christ Church Episcopal Family in Tracy City. He graduated from Grundy County High School in 1949 where he was an outstanding quarterback, making honorable mention all-state in football. He most recently was elected to the Grundy County Sports Hall of Fame.
He started college at the University of the South, Sewanee as member of the football squad. When the Korean Crisis broke out, Jib left his beloved Sewanee and joined the Marine Corp. After his service, he went to school to what was then TPI in Cookeville.
There he met his wife of 60 years, Missy Wright. He worked for Union Carbide at all three plants and Idaho National Labs for 30 years. He became an avid golfer and eventually became a master club builder and repairer.
He proudly owned and operated Henley Golf and Driving Range in Kingston, with wife, Missy, at his side and probably out working him. He was father to Kim and Kelly and grandfather to Spencer and Nick. Jib was an avid reader and Civil War buff.
He loved Civil War travels with his friend, Fred Moore. Golf was a love and he wanted and did pass that love on to anyone willing to listen. His parents and wife, Missy, preceded him to heaven, as did his brother Edd and sisters, Lucille, Rosa, and Helen.
Cherishing memories of him will be daughters, Kim Kennedy and husband Bruce, Kelly Boles and husband Jim, and grandsons, Spencer and Nick Boles. He also leaves behind his brother, Roy Henley, of Kansas City, Kansas; sisters and brothers-in-law, Larellen Whitfield and husband Pat, Una Coffman and husband Don, Sherry Schuman and husband John; and a host of nieces and nephews. It has to be said he loved Sherry but loved John more.
He wanted to learn something new every day and taught his family that they were rich because they had many friends, and to give everyone the benefit of doubt. The family would like to thank Amedysis Home Health and Hospice for their care and compassion and Dr. Rodney McMillin, his physician and friend. They would also like to thank Ginger Schubert whom he loved to hear sing and Nancy Griffin and Angie Moore for caregiving these past few weeks.
Also, a great big thanks to his buddies at Lakeside Golf Course for helping to bring joy of golf and companionship these past few years. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 16, 2018, 2 p.m., at Saint Andrews Episcopal Church with interment immediately following in Kingston Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 15, 5 – 7 p.m. at Kyker Funeral Home in Harriman.
