Obituary for Dr. Tom Loomis Dr. Tom Loomis, age 70, was a lifelong resident of Sweetwater, TN. He left this world for his heavenly home on September 8, 2018. Tom was a beloved dentist for thirty-seven years.
He graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry, and his patients and staff were like family to him. Lisa Harrison, his former dental assistant and current receptionist, worked alongside Dr. Loomis for thirty-one years, and Missy Butler, current hygienist, worked with him for eighteen years. More recently, Tom’s daughter, Jennifer Cooper, had the privilege of working as his dental assistant for the past year.
Tom’s passions included travel, photography, reading, arrowhead hunting, and fly-fishing, which his son Ben Loomis taught him and enjoyed with him. Tom recently traveled to Newfoundland for a special fishing and sight-seeing trip. Perhaps his most beloved of all hobbies though was spending time in the Tellico Mountains connecting with his Heavenly Father through reflection, nature photography, hiking, and camping.
Tom graduated high school from the Tennessee Military Institute, where he later taught for a brief time before becoming a dentist. He was a devout Christian and devoted member of Glenlock Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School. Tom was preceded in death by his parents Joseph West Loomis Sr. and Catherine Anne Loomis of Sweetwater, TN, and his beloved lab Annie and wolf-dog Scout.
He is survived by his son Benjamin Thomas Loomis, daughter-in-law Carol Ann Loomis, and precious granddaughter Annabelle Grace Loomis of Mt. Juliet, TN; daughter Jennifer Elizabeth Cooper and son-in-law Robert Harding Cooper of Knoxville, TN; former wife of many years, Sharon Barnard Loomis of Sweetwater, TN; brother Joseph West Loomis Jr. (“Bucky”), husband of Earla Loomis, both of Athens, TN; brother Lynn Marshall Loomis of Sweetwater, TN; and a host of other close relatives and treasured friends. Receiving of friends will be held at Glenlock Baptist Church on Thursday, September 13th from 5-7 pm with funeral service to follow at 7 pm with Dr. Gerald Atkins officiating.
The graveside service will be at West View Cemetery Friday morning at 11 am.
