Dr. Charles H. E. Smith, Sr. (Chick), 82 died Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Aurora Senior Living of Manokin in Princess Anne, MD. Born in Machipongo, VA, he was the son of the late Major and Henry (White) Smith. His late wife Ruby Walker Smith died in 1972.

He attended the former Salisbury High School and graduated in 1954 from Northampton High School in Northampton, VA. He matriculated at Norfolk State University, Norfolk, VA earning a diploma in Liberal Arts. He earned both a Bachelor and Master’s degree in History from Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA and his P.H. D. in Education and Social Studies from the University of VA, Charlottesville, VA.

He served as a Fellow at several colleges. His teaching career which spanned 37 years, was at several primary schools in Goochland, VA, Exmore, VA, and Portsmouth, VA. He also taught at Norfolk State Evening University, University of Maryland, Eastern Shore and the Eastern Correctional Institution.

He served in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge in 1959. He was a member of Kappa Phi Kappa, Educational Fraternity and Alpha Phi Alpha, Chapter in Princess Anne, MD. He was also a former member of several educational and school/college alumni associations.

His civic involvement included the NAACP, Tri-County Org. and New Directions Committee. Dr. Smith also served as a Board member for several local organizations.

He was a member of Mt. Calvary U.M. Church in Fruitland where he served as chair on several committees. Dr. Smith was also the author of “Calvary: An Oral History”.

His survivors include a son: Charles H.E. Smith, Jr. of Lake Ridge, VA; four grandchildren: Charles H.E., III of Arlington, Va, Joel Smith of Falls Church, VA and James, Jr. and Jonta’ Trower of Salisbury, MD; one sister, Betty R. Smith of Fruitland, MD, several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, a daughter, Phyllis A. Wright, brother, Isaac Smith and sister, Annie Mae Thomas preceded him in death. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Mt.

Calvary UM Church in Fruitland. Friends my view, Friday, September 28, 2018, from 6-8 pm at Jolley Memorial Chapel, P.A. in Salisbury, MD where Fraternal rites will be held at 7:00 p.m. Another viewing will be held Saturday, at the church, one hour prior to service. Interment will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 1, 2018 at Bethel AME Church cemetery in Cape Charles, VA.
