David L. Steward, 98, of Connersville passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at Fayette Regional Health System where he had been a patient since Saturday. For the past five years, David had been a resident at Caroleton Manor. One of ten children of James H. and Elizabeth Sherman Steward, David was born on September 30, 1920, in London, Kentucky.

David was a veteran of the United States Army and had service in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and the Ardennes Forest. On D-Day+2, during the invasion of France, his job was to put in telephone circuitry along Omaha Beach beyond enemy lines for Army Air Corps communications. He was awarded five bronze stars and in 2011, was awarded the Medal of Jubilee of Liberty.

He was discharged with the rank of Tech Sergeant in 1945. On February 16, 1946, David was married in London, Kentucky to H. Ruth Gregory. In 1947, they moved to Connersville for residence.

Mrs. Steward passed away on August 27, 2012. He was employed for 36 years at General Telephone of Indiana which became GTE. He started as a lineman and retired in 1983 from the state construction crew.

David was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, a Life Member of Knights of Columbus Council #861, Warren Lodge #15 F&AM, the Scottish Rite, a life member of Lodge #1065 Fraternal Order of Eagles, and had been a member of the V.F.W. and America Legion. Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Wilhelm and her husband, Frank of Connersville; two grandchildren, Scott Wilhelm of Connersville and Trine Wilhelm and her spouse, Melissa of New Haven, Indiana; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Willard Steward of London, Kentucky and Leo Steward of Fairfield, Ohio; and a number of nieces and nephews. Besides his wife of 66 years, David was preceded in death by his parents, and seven brothers and sisters.

The rosary will be recited at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2019, in St. Gabriel Catholic Church with visitation to follow until the Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by Reverend Dustin Boehm, at 11:00 a.m. Burial with military honors conducted by the Fayette County Veterans Council will follow in Dale Cemetery.
