David A. Coakley, 73 of Collinsville, Illinois, formerly of Granite City, Illinois passed away on Monday, November 12, 2018 at Anderson Hospital surrounded by his family. David was born on June 14, 1945 in Alton, Illinois; the son of the late Robert Lee and Robbie Darlene (Cheek) Coakley. David was an electrician at Granite City Steel for 34 years, retiring in 2000.

He was a faithful member of West 22nd Street Baptist Church in Granite City, where he was a trustee and head usher, a member of the Granite City V.F.W. and a member of the Granite City Eagles. David gave countless hours of his time coaching Little League Baseball and American Legion Baseball and was a known outdoorsman where he enjoyed many hunting, fishing and golf outings. David loved life and adored his family and will be remembered for all the special times they shared together.

David is survived by and will be missed by his wife; Joanne (Noel) Coakley, whom he married on February 22, 1964; son, Keith Coakley (Laura Mellenthin) of South Roxana, Illinois; daughter, Cindy (Steve) Vargo of Maryville, Illinois; grandson, Connor Vargo of Maryville, Illinois; grandchildren, Andrea Mellenthin of South Roxana, Illinois. Matt (Arie) Mellenthin of Godfrey, Illinois, Sarah (Chad) Bruce of Wood River, Illinois; brother, Melvin (Donna) Coakley of Granite City, Illinois; brother-in-law, David (Norine) Noel; loved by many nieces and nephews as well as being the greatest grandpa a grandson could ever ask for and his doggies, Libby and Buster. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother; Rodger (Janice) Coakley.

Visitation for David will be held on Friday, November 16, 2018 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. In celebration of David’s life, visitation will continue from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Tom Hufty and Pastor Keith Braddick officiating at First Baptist Church of Maryville, 7110 Illinois State Route 162 in Maryville. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.

Memorial donations in David’s honor are suggested to West 22nd Street Baptist Church, 2808 West 22nd Street, Granite City, IL 62040 or First Baptist Church of Maryville.
