Dr. Lane Netherland, age 77, of Lawton, passed away Friday, March 8, 2019 surrounded by his family at his residence after a brief, but intense battle with cancer.

Lane was born January 23, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky to Edwin Lane and Gladys Netherland. He grew up in Indiana where he developed a love for playing basketball and baseball. Lane was a graduate of Southside High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Lane married the love of his life, Joelene Wisel, on September 1, 1959 in Roanoke, Indiana. Lane earned his bachelor’s degree from Huntington College in Huntington, Indiana. After accepting a fellowship to Oklahoma State University, he and his family moved from Indiana to Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1965.

Lane received his master’s and doctorate degrees in agricultural and applied sciences from Oklahoma State University. After earning his master’s degree, he taught biological sciences in Tonkawa, Oklahoma at Northern Oklahoma College for three years. Lane returned to Stillwater in 1969 to work on his doctorate and received his degree in 1971.

He accepted a teaching position with Cameron University in 1972, teaching and impacting student’s lives for 41 years, then retiring in 2003. Lane was a member of First Baptist Church. He was also the first president of Phi Kappa Phi at Cameron University.

While a dedicated and caring Professor, he challenged and inspired students to work hard to be their personal best. Many of his students went on to have prestigious careers in the medical community, and several of his students were also physicians to him through the years. Lane was an ardent and enthusiastic supporter of education and empowering one’s self with knowledge.

A man of varied interests, he was an avid and outstanding golfer, played the guitar and piano, penned poetry, took delight in gardening and fishing with his grandchildren. Woodworking and making golf clubs were also hobbies he enjoyed. Lane was a generous man who was passionate about, and dearly loved, his wife, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom they all affectionately called “Buck”.

He loved the outdoors and nature, along with a very special beagle named “Scooter”. Lane was a profoundly special and unique man to those who knew and loved him, and he will be missed tremendously. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Joelene of 59 years; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Laurie Netherland Lewis and her husband Kevin, Hillsboro, Texas, Connie Netherland Hays and her husband Mike, Edmond, Oklahoma, and Kathy Netherland, Lawton, Oklahoma; a daughter-in-law, Marci Love Netherland, Gainesville, Florida; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Megan and Scott Mansfield, Matthew Lewis, Mikel Lewis, Dan and Rachel Hays, Nate and Ashley Hays, Annie Hays and fiancé Nils Mueggenburg, Luke Netherland, Sarah Netherland and Heather and Steve Patnode; and six great grandchildren, Kellen, Macy, Aiden, Parker Ann, Gavin and Reagan.

His parents, as well as his son, Dr. Michael Dyer Netherland and two brothers, Gary and Brian, preceded him in death.
