Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery under the direction of Becker-Rabon funeral home. The family will greet friends from 6:00 -7:30 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Charles Chester Turner, age 86, Lawton passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, March 10, 2019. He was born September 27, 1932 in Lawton to Homer and Edna Corwin Turner. He began first grade at Fairview Rural School, then attended the Victory School in Lawton from 1943 to 1944 and completed fifth through eighth grades at Fairview School.
He graduated from Lawton High School in 1951 and later from Cameron State Agricultural College with an associate degree in science. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 with the Signal Corps, serving 16 months in Pirmasens, Germany. He married Glenda Moss on April 27, 1956 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Lawton.
He worked for RCA Government Services until he began Civil Service at Fort Sill in 1961 with the CED school. He was a past member of Fort Sill Supervisor’s Council and the Advisory Committee for the Department of Technology at Cameron College. While at Fort Sill, he received the Commanders Award, Saint Barbara’s award and the Special Act award.
He retired in 1989 as Chief of Electronics Division of the Field Artillery School. Upon retirement, Mayor Bob Shanklin, proclaimed September 22, 1989 as Charles Turner Day to recognize his 30 years of dignity, loyalty and leadership as the Electronics Division Chief of the Communication Electronics Department at Fort Sill. He then worked for MUSAK installing electronic equipment in various businesses throughout southwest Oklahoma.
He is survived by his wife, of the home; two sons, Allen Turner of Colleyville, Texas and David Turner and wife Glenna of Norman, Oklahoma; two daughters, Karen Prock and husband Kevin of Flower Mound, Texas and Janice Rup and husband Chris of Colleyville, Texas; three grandsons, Kyle Prock, Tyler and Jake Rup; his sister Barbara Bugg and her husband LeRoy of Norman, Oklahoma; his sister-in-law Phyllis McFarland and her husband Carl, Norman, Oklahoma; and 11 nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister-in-law, George and Margaret Jean Turner, and a sister, Wynona Tompkins Cornwell.
