Dr. Tom Barrett, 84 of Belpre, Ohio died surrounded by his family on January 12, 2019 at his residence. He was born in Marietta, Ohio on April 18, 1934 and was the son of the late Carroll J. and Clara Lee Kestermeier Barrett. He was a 1952 graduate of Vincent High School.

He then graduated from Ohio State University in 1959 with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. Following graduation he worked in Tiffin, Ohio until moving to Belpre in 1976 where he opened his own practice. He continued with his practice for over 30 years where he treated large and small animals as well as some exotic animals.

Tom was a member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church. He was a charter member of the Belpre Rotary Club, a member of the Belpre Health Board. He was President of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Board, and was co founder of the Parkersburg Veterinary Emergency Clinic.

He had also been a member of the Board of Directors for the Washington State College in Marietta. He had been a beef cattle farmer and farmed for many years. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Jan Barrett, his two sons, Scott (Trudi) Barrett of Lancaster, Ohio, Jeff (Maritza) Barrett of Belpre, Ohio.

His grandchildren, Brittney (Josh) Williams of Parkersburg, WV, Bradley (Mariah) Barrett of Omaha, Neb, Cody Barrett of Clarksville, TN, Jamie (Suzette) Barrett of Belpre, Ohio, Austin (Randi) Barrett of Clarksville, TN and five great gandchildren. Also surviving are his two sisters, Susanne Scheid, Marita Oxender and a brother, Charles Barrett and several nieces and nephews. His best friends also survive him, his dog Brutus and Mitty the kitty.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Jenifer Barrett, and two brothers, David and Jim Barrett. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM at the St. Ambrose Catholic Church with Father David Huffman as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Little Hocking, Ohio.

Friends may call at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Belpre on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of your choice. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.
