Obituary for Mr. Edmond “Sarg” Ferriter Edmond L. “Sarg” Ferriter, 89, passed away peacefully at Berkshire Medical Center on Saturday, April 7, 2018, surrounded by family. Edmond was born in Pittsfield, MA. On November 10, 1928 to Leona (Therrien) Curry and John Leo Ferriter.
He was raised by his mother and stepfather Joseph Curry. Edmond enlisted in the U.S Navy in 1943 at the age of 14 years old. He received an honorable discharge several months later as an underage veteran.
Edmond returned to Pittsfield and went on to graduate from Pittsfield High School, class of 1948. After graduation, he worked as a plumbing apprentice for Shedd Plumbing and joined the U.S Naval Reserves. He served as a seaman on the U.S.S Albany during the Korean War and later transferred to naval aviation, working with crash and rescue operations.
In 1952, Edmond married Regina (Shea) Ferriter; they shared forty nine wonderful years of marriage and had six children together. Ed became a police officer for the city of Pittsfield in 1955, retiring as a Sargent in 1985 after thirty years of service. Showing his pride for his military service, he belonged to the Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Korean War Veteran’s association.
Ed was also a lifetime member of the American Legion, serving as a post commander for the Lanesboro, MA post and later as a district and state commander. Ed had many passions and hobbies. He enjoyed playing billiards and bowling with friends.
He was an avid hunter and sportsman, as well as, an accomplished fisherman who shared his passion for the outdoors with the community by teaching the Hunter’s Education course at Pittsfield High School for twenty years. Ed was also an accomplished competitive pistol shooter who won many awards and commendations and an incredibly gifted oil painter, as well as, prolific taxidermist. In earlier years, you could find him at his family camp in Pownal VT.
spending time with friends and family, raising honey bees, hunting and trapping, or hiking the Appalachian trail with his sons and brother, Leo Layden. In later years, you could find him cracking a joke with friends at his coffee club, championing his weekly bowling league, or spending time with his long-time companion Hildegard Sheerin. Ed leaves behind three daughters, Laurie (Ferriter) Altsman of Pittsfield Ma.
, Jodi (Ferriter) Welch and husband Jim Welch of Easthampton, Ma. , Ann (Dunn) Doyle and husband Bill Doyle of Pittsfield Ma. ; three sons, Robert Ferriter of Texas, Michael Ferriter and his fiance Leah Wetherell of Pittsfield, Ma.
, and Edmond Leo Jr. and husband Michael Arnold of San Francisco, Ca. ; ten grandchildren, Patrick Doyle, Matthew Doyle, Andrew Altsman and wife Helena (Fruscio) Altsman, Casey Ferriter, Christopher Ferriter and wife Ashley (Burney) Ferriter, J.C Welch, Thomas Welch, Jarret Ferriter, Emily Ferriter, and Robert Ferriter Jr.; great granddaughter, Penelope Altsman and his sister Leona (Curry) Serrafino and husband Patrick Serrafino. Edmond was pre-deceased by his beloved wife Regina (Shea) Ferriter, his son Jarret Ferriter, and his brother Leo Layden.
Funeral Notice: Funeral services for Edmond will be Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 8 am from the Dwyer Funeral Home, 776 North St., Pittsfield, MA with at Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Mark’s Church celebrated by Rev. David Aufiero, pastor. Burial with full Military Honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
