Obituary for Mr. Edward Anthony McMahon Mr. Edward Anthony McMahon passed away at age 87 on October 13, 2018 at Berkshire Medical Center. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 15, 1931 in Pittsfield, MA, the son of Joseph and Marcella Levy McMahon, of Pittsfield, MA.
He was usually surrounded by friends, family, and those who respected and admired him. He was one of those wonderful men to which many people would gravitate. His friends knew him as “Itch” or “The Captain,” and he was happiest when he was connecting with people.
Edward was pre-deceased by his parents and his sister, Marilyn T. Caughlin. He is survived by his wife: Julie Manning McMahon of Cohoes, NY, two daughters: Kathleen Ann Norris (Steve) of Cave Creek, AZ and Colleen Ann (Paul) McDougal of Milton, MA and four sons: Edward C. McMahon (Gloria) of Richmond, MA, Sean M. McMahon (Kerry) of Cheshire, MA, Timothy J. McMahon (Velka) of Peterborough, NH, and Terrance P. McMahon of Jacksonville, FL. He left behind 12 grandchildren which brought him much joy: Edward, Thomas and Joseph McMahon, Cailin and Cassidy McMahon, Jack, Julia McDougal, Marina and Kelly McMahon, David and Joseph McMahon and Casey Norris.
He also left behind 6 precious great grandchildren. Edward was an amazing and loving father and instilled in his children the need for an education, the spirit of hard work and the mentality that one should never give up on their dreams. He was living proof that dreams are attainable, as he eventually became a professional baseball player.
All six children attended college; the four boys were baseball players in college, and Edward and Sean both played professional baseball, following in their father’s footsteps. Both daughters chose careers within the education system. Graduating from Pittsfield High School in 1949, his athleticism was undeniable as he was active in both basketball and baseball.
His first love for sports, of course, was baseball. He was able to lead his team to a state championship that year against Brockton High School. After receiving all Berkshire honors, and eventually becoming a member of the Berkshire County Baseball Hall of Fame, he went on to sign a professional baseball contract with the Cincinnati Reds, and was offered the league’s top signing bonus at that time.
Later in life, Edward would go on to become a salesman for Berkshire Coca Cola. For a time, he also owned Marcon Distributors and subsequently worked for Liberty Liquors of Springfield. Up until his retirement in 2001, Edward was employed by Girardi distributors selling beer and liquor to restaurants, bars and stores.
Needless to say, he was friends with just about every bar owner within a 100 mile radius. He was also an active member of The General Electric Athletic Association of Pittsfield and remained a loyal member, even after his retirement, in fact, right up until he became sick. An avid athlete and sports fanatic until the end, he even—as he liked to happily recall—got to square off against the Harlem Globetrotters.
While his heart may have belonged to sports, his life was dedicated to those he loved most, his precious family The family would like to thank staff of the Emergency Dept. and the Critical Care Step Down Unit at Berkshire Medical Center.
