Fred “Sonny” Shuert, age 87, of Lake Odessa passed unexpectedly at the Butterworth Campus of Spectrum Health. Sonny was born on January 23, 1931 in Lansing to Fred R. and Ruth E (Blakslee) Shuert. He proudly served our country in both the Navy and later in the Army serving one tour of duty in Korea during the War.

His passion for his country was profound, being a faithful member of VFW 4461 serving on the Honor Guard for many years. In 1955 he married Joyce Ann Hodge and they spent 63 years of marriage together. Sonny worked in the repair division for U-Haul of Grand Rapids retiring as President of his division.

He came out of retirement to drive school bus for Lakewood Schools and later served as custodian at Central United Methodist Church. He will be dearly missed by: wife Joyce, son Gary (Nancy), grandchildren; Nathan and Katie, siblings; Joanne (Ray) McDaniels, Ronnie (Mae) Shuert, Patsy Cole, Bill Shuert, Des (Mary) Shuert, Sandy (John) Widgery and Randy (Dodie) Shuert, many nieces and nephews and special fur babies Sophie and Sammie. Sonny was preceded in death by: parents, siblings; Connie Seavolt and Becky Shuert.

Visitation will be held on Monday January 21, 2019 from 2pm until 4pm and 6pm until 8pm at Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday January 22, 2019 at 11am with Military Honors at Koops Funeral Chapel. In Lieu of flowers memorials in Sonny’s name can be given to the Alta Mae Memorial Scholarship Fund at the VFW Post 4461 in Lake Odessa or Humane Society of Barry County.
