Obituary of Garnet Brock Garnet Oberia Lucas Brock moved from her beloved home in Seagrove, NC, to her heavenly home on Thursday, April 19, 2018. Garnet was born on July 27, 1930, to town merchants John Randolph and Nettie Lucas as the fourth of six siblings, and she enjoyed growing up in Seagrove. The lifelong friendships she made at Seagrove School where she played basketball and was also a cheerleader brought her great joy.
After graduating in 1948, she was employed at Union Carbide in Asheboro. In 1954 she contracted tuberculosis which resulted in a year’s stay at McCain Sanitarium in Raeford where her nieces and nephews would visit her and speak to her from under a window. Her roommate was the aunt of a young man in the army, Shelton Brock, who was stationed in Austria.
The two exchanged many letters that then led to courtship and their marriage on July 13, 1957. They lived in Shelton’s hometown of Mount Olive, NC, for two years, where Garnet was very active in women’s community groups and was voted President of the Rones Chapel Women’s Fellowship. She relocated with Shelton to Kinston, NC in 1959 where they stayed until 1994 and were members of First Baptist Church, Grace Missionary Baptist Church, and Bible Missionary Baptist Church, gaining very close friendships that she maintained throughout the rest of her life.
God blessed their marriage with two children, and Garnet enjoyed being a homemaker and mother. She also took classes at Lenoir Community College and worked at Kinston City Schools. In 1994, the two moved to Seagrove, and Garnet once again enjoyed being close to her brothers and the friendships from her youth.
She was a member of the Women’s Fellowship at Seagrove Christian Church and volunteered with Meals on Wheels for many years. Garnet accepted Christ as her Savior in 1950 and would always seek opportunities to share His love with others. She was a giving person, never concerned with having the most or best worldly possessions but instead spending her time providing spiritual and emotional support and guidance for her family and friends.
Her love was unconditional and she readily sacrificed for those she loved. Family was very important to her, and from her teen years until death she was an ardent supporter of her nieces and nephews who often visited with their “Aunt Garnet”. One of her greatest joys was when the Lucas family would get together for reunions at the “Seagrove home place”.
Garnet loved flowers and where ever she lived, beautiful flowers flourished. In addition to her parents, Garnet is preceded in death by her siblings Davies Lucas, Gladys Duncan, Clifford Lucas, Jean Hultman, and Raeford Lucas. She is survived by her husband Shelton Brock of Seagrove, and her two children Susan Brock Huff (husband, Ron) of Asheboro and Stephen Brock (wife, Robin) of Morrisville.
She delighted in being a grandmother to six grandchildren: Brandon Lokey (fiancée Meridith Lowe), Samuel Huff, and Makayla, Jonathan, Nicholas and Christopher Brock. The family will receive friends at Seagrove Christian Church, Hwy 705 (E Main Street) in Seagrove, NC, on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 from 1:00 to 2:00. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 at the church with Rev.
L.D. Pritchard and Rev. Randy Lucas officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cemetery Memorial Fund at Seagrove Christian Church.
