Grace’s Obituary Grace W. (Landes) Freed, 86, of Harleysville, Pennsylvania went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 20, 2019 at Abington Memorial Hospital. She was the loving wife of Stanley L. Freed for 64 years. Grace was born in Skippack Twp.
, Pennsylvania to the late Jonathan S. Landes and the late Sallie B. (Weller) Landes. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a floor manager for Hatfield Packing Company. Grace was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She worked as a child caregiver in her home for many years, as an assistant nursery school teacher for the former Methacton Mennonite Preschool in Norristown and then for Precious Life Learning Center in Norristown, and lastly as a self-employed seamstress/ironer in the Harleysville area. Grace volunteered with her husband at the Mennonite Re Center by cutting quilt squares and assembling quilt tops. She was a member of the former First Mennonite Church of Norristown where she served as a Sunday school and VBS teacher, a current member of Nueva Vida Norristown New Life, and a current attender at Towamencin Mennonite Church.
Grace loved spending time with her family and having monthly luncheons with her sisters. She also loved reading the Bible, devotional books, and singing along with hymns in her alto voice. Grace’s hobbies included: sewing of clothing and quilts, playing table games especially Skip-Bo, working on “Places Please” puzzle books, jigsaw puzzles, and canning fruits and making homemade applesauce.
She enjoyed watching the local community news and was known by her family as the “Mom News Network”. Grace also enjoyed taking day trips to the Lancaster area with her husband. She was a quiet, humble, caring, compassionate woman who loved to laugh and selflessly thought of others before herself.
Grace had a sharp mind to the end, often gave words of affirmation, and loved the Lord and the church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Stephen “Steve” L. Freed & wife, Robin of Lansdale, PA; her three daughters, Grace Elaine Halama & husband, Robert of Camden Wyoming, DE, Deborah J. Salvo & husband, Tony of Collegeville, PA, Rhoda M. Detwiler & husband, Alan, Sr. of Harleysville, PA; her six grandchildren – Chris, Justin, Kristy, Jesse, Sherry, & Jennifer; her four step-grandchildren – Kim, Alan Jr., Tom, & Laurel; her seven step-great-grandchildren – Andrew, Vanessa, Erik, Michael, Lukas, Shawn, & Eli; her eight step-great-great-grandchildren – Aiden, Rylee, Brielle, Jackson, Chase, Leah, Violet, & Aubrey; her eight sisters, Miriam Souder of Telford, PA, Irene Hunsberger & husband, Walter of Collegeville, PA, Betty Landes of Schwenksville, PA, Doris Hunsberger of Frederick, PA, Edith Landes of Collegeville, PA, Ethel Pennington & husband, Blake of Spring Mount, PA, Paulette Moyer of Quakertown, PA, Rachel Frye & husband, Daniel of Quakertown, PA. In addition to her parents, Grace was preceded in death by her five brothers, Jacob, Jonathan Jr., Robert, William “Billy”, & Philip Landes and her two sisters, Ella & Sara Landes.
Viewings will be held on Friday, May 24, 2019 at Towamencin Mennonite Church, Route 63, Kulpsville, Pennsylvania 19443 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm and on Saturday, May 25, 2019 from 10:00 am – 11:00 am, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am.
