After several years of fighting the good fight against Alzheimer’s, Gracie Pruitt Hess age 83, of Richlands, Virginia won the battle Monday, May 27, 2019. She was born in Buchanan County, Virginia and as the daughter of the late George Pruitt and Lila White Pruitt. Gracie had worked at Eastern Isles and as a Nurse’s Aide and Linen Aide at Clinch Valley Medical Center for over 30 years.

She was a loving Christian mother, sister and grandmother who enjoyed time with her family. Gracie had a smile that warmed your heart, and she always cared about others. She attended the Laymans Chapel Church until her illness kept her home, and she loved reading her bible.

She had lived most of her life in the in the Richlands area. She will be greatly missed by everyone who was blessed to know her. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Columbus O. Hess; sister, Georgie Pruitt, Ocie Byrd; half-sister, Molly Hagerman Wilhight; brothers, Curtis Pruitt, John Pruitt, Paul Pruitt and James Pruitt.

Those survive her are her: Son, Roderick Hess and companion, Tonya Watson of Richlands, VA Daughter, Melinda Hess Smith and husband, Doug of Richlands, VA Sister, Maudie Allen of Richlands, VA Brothers: Roger Pruitt of Jewell Ridge, VA Rufus Pruitt of Jewell Ridge, VA Grandchildren, Heather Hess, Josh Hess, Derick Smith and wife, Beth, Todd Smith and wife, Mattie Great grandchildren, Avery, Carter, Bowen, Beckett, Rhett and a sixth great grandson due to arrive in August. In Lieu of flowers, please make a memorial contribution to the Alzheimer’s foundation Service and entombment will be private. Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia is in charge of arrangements.
