Gretchen’s Obituary Gretchen Kay Shavlik, age 68, of New Ulm passed away peacefully on Friday, January 18, 2019 at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, IL. A Funeral service will be held 11:00 am on Friday, January 25, 2019 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Pastor Timothy Smith will be Officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 pm Thursday, January 24, 2019 at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home – NORTH Chapel. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

She is survived by her husband Dwight; son Calub Shavlik of Nevis, MN; daughters Caliann (Brett) Linbo of Round Lake, IL; Kaylyn (Steve) Lage of New Ulm, MN; Kilah (Darrel) Patzner of Baldwin, WI; and her 10 precious grandchildren Keyana, Makiah, Zoey, Jazzlyn, Zeven, Shaleah, Talia, Trayton, Alaina & Bentley. Gretchen was preceded in death by her parents and mother-in-law Velma & father-in-law Archie Shavlik. Gretchen was born on November 7, 1950 in New Ulm to Einar and Alma (Witt) Ness.

She attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School and graduated from New Ulm Senior High School. On February 6, 1971 she married Dwight Shavlik. They celebrated 48 years of marriage with 4 children.

Gretchen attended St. Cloud Beauty College and had her own beauty shop in her own home. She was a stay-at-home Mom until her children were all in school. In the next years, she had various part-time positions with the majority being spent as a secretary at Super Sweet Research Farm until their closure and then a secretary of maintenance at New Ulm Medical Center.

Gretchen enjoyed spending time with her own kids and grandchildren. She wouldn’t miss an opportunity to watch them play sports, dance, perform in a concert, or play “grandma’s golf”. Her annual trip to Miami with her daughters was always a highlight of her year.

We-Fest was always on her calendar to spend time with her kids and husband. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends, and baking and cooking in her free time. She enjoyed participating in bible study and volunteering to serve coffee and donuts on Sunday mornings at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

We will forever miss “Call me when you get home”! The family prefers memorials to St. Paul’s Lutheran School Building Fund.
