Howard’s Obituary Howard A. Zins, age 75, of New Ulm, died Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. Burial will be in the Swan Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 25, 2019 at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home – NORTH Chapel and will continue from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Funeral Home. To leave an online condolence for his family, or to sign the guestbook, go to: www. mvfh.org Howard is survived by his wife, Sharon; his daughters, Michele (Brent) Farasyn of New Ulm, and Nicole (Joe) Anderson of Minnetonka; his sons, Dan (Barb) and Nathan Zins, both of New Ulm; grandchildren, Cody Gasner, Amber Marmol, Giana and William Anderson, Ceanna, Nickolas, and Zoey Zins; two great-grandchildren, Skyler and Sydney West-Gasner; and his sisters, Carol Huelskamp of New Ulm, and Evie (Vic) Anderson of Fairmont.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Bonita Boettger. Howard Alfred Zins was born on July 31, 1943 in New Ulm to Martin & Viola (Sondag) Zins. He graduated from Cathedral of the Holy Trinity High School in 1961.

Howard entered the Army in the fall of 1961 and continued his military service with the National Guard for 26 years. He received the honor of being inducted in the Court of Honor at Camp Ripley for his service with the National Guard. Beginning in May 1965 he joined the New Ulm Police department and retired from the NUPD as Chief of Police in 2002.

During his time with the NUPD, he helped to continue the German American Police Program which regularly sent New Ulm police officers over to Germany for training and vice versa. Howard was a member of the International Police Association, The Legion, Turner Hall, Area Sport Fishermen, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and ESGR. On November 17, 2001, Howard was united in marriage to Sharon Besemer in Duluth.

The couple enjoyed spending time out at their home on the KC Road in New Ulm and spending their winters in Rockport TX with their “Drifters” friends. Howard especially enjoyed the time he was able to spend hunting, fishing, being outdoors and spending time with all his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him, blessed be his memory.
