Obituary for Gretchen Sternfels Gretchen Kerne Sternfels, 80, returned to her heavenly home on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer. Her strong Catholic faith and family supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace. A visitation will be held in her honor on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church, Thibodaux, Louisiana from 9:30 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 p.m. Burial services will follow at St. Anne’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Napoleonville, Louisiana.
She is survived by her ten children; Christine (Darryl) Schonacher, Leo (Jennifer) Sternfels, Paula (Stan) Geiger, Louise (Brett) Roussel, Roy (Cheryl) Sternfels, Sarah Sternfels, Maggie (James) Covington, Lucy (John) Dupont, Julie (Kevin) Morvant, and Ronny Jr. (Robin) Sternfels; 33 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Kiki Patton, Betsy Bootle, Debbie Bagert, and Margot Donnes; and sister-in-law, Dolly Brien. She is proceeded in death by her husband Ronny Sternfels, Sr.; grandchildren Alyce Chauvin and Timothy Thiac, II; and sister Janet Lapeyre. Gretchen was born August 14, 1938 to the late Dr. Leo and Katherine Menuet Kerne.
She graduated from Thibodaux High and attended Newcomb college where she studied music. After marrying the love of her life, she and Ronny resided in Napoleonville where they raised their ten children. She devoted her life to the Lord and her family.
Playing the organ for St. Anne’s Choir was one of the many activities she enjoyed. Along with her love of music, she also had a deep love and appreciation for the simple beauty of nature. All who encountered Gretchen was touched by her gentle and humble spirit.
Even though she had a quiet demeanor, her faith spoke volumes. The last two years of her life she resided at St. Joseph Manor in Thibodaux where she continued daily Mass and Adoration. Gretchen loved her wonderful friends at the Manor and was touched by the spirit of community.
The family will be forever grateful for the administration, employees, and residents of St. Joseph Manor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Online condolences can be given at www.
