Harold’s Obituary Harold G. Ehlers, age 94, of Cornucopia, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Northern Lights Services, in Washburn. He was born October 13, 1924, in Cornucopia, the son of Herman and Esther (Johnson) Ehlers. In 1942, he graduated from the last class of the Cornucopia High School.
He then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for a year. Harold enlisted in the US Army on July 15, 1943 and on March 23, 1944 he was in England. On June 6, 1944, he was part of the Normandy Landing on Utah Beach.
Harold served in France and was a part of the Antwerp Liberation, Battle of the Bulge, and the Occupation of Berlin. He was back in the United States on March 2, 1946 and was discharged on March 19, 1946. On August 26, 1947, he married Virginia McDermott, in Ashland.
He then attended the University of Marquette for a year, prior to returning to Cornucopia. Harold was the owner and operator of Ehlers Store, in Cornucopia, from 1948 until 2006, when he retired to the land of jazz. He was an active member of the Cornucopia Club until 2014, several Jazz Associations, and the American Legion.
For many years, he was on the School Board of the South Shore District and is on the South Shore School District Wall of Fame. Harold was an excellent cribbage player and enjoyed bowling and playing pool. His passion was having people listening to and sharing the history of jazz.
He is survived by his two children, Mark (Pauline Colamatteo) Ehlers, Cornucopia and Paul (Claudia Barsness) Ehlers, Cornucopia; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Scott) Hinker, Wausau, Jessica (Brent) Galbreth, Wausau, Travis Harmon, Dover, ID, Emily Ehlers, Seattle, WA, and Susanna Ehlers, Montevideo, Uruguay; seven great-grandchildren, Emma Hinker, Lauren Hinker, Claire Hinker, Hannah Hinker, Aiden Galbreth, Isaac Galbreth, and Sage Harmon; a brother, Owen (Mary Lou) Ehlers, Hartford City, IN; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia on January 1, 2000; four brothers, Alton Ehlers, Walter Ehlers, Robert Ehlers, and Herman Ehlers Jr; two sisters, Myrtle Walton and Esther Ann Brooks; and an infant daughter. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, January 14, 2019 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Cornucopia, with Minister Mary Meierotto officiating.
Spring inurnment and military rites will take place in the Town of Bell Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 PM on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at the Bratley Funeral Home, in Washburn and continue one hour prior to the service on Monday, January 14, 2019 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Cornucopia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the family as a memorial fund will be established.
