Hazel Smith Elm Creek Resident Hazel Smith, 79, of Elm Creek passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at Kearney Regional Medical Center in Kearney. Celebration of Life will be at 12:33 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at the Elm Creek Lions Club. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.

Hazel JoAnn Smith was born on September 10, 1939 in rural Odessa to Marvin C. and Alice W. (Beavers) Swartwood. She received her education from Odessa High School graduating with the class of 1958. Hazel worked for Eaton’s Corporation for over 27 years.

In 1960, Hazel was united in marriage to Dennis Shirley and to this union two children were born: Pam and Marty. The couple later separated. In 1988, Hazel married Brad Smith, this marriage ended in divorce.

Hazel enjoyed traveling and was an avid Husker fan, but above all she enjoyed her time spent with family and friends. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Pam Shirley and son, Marty Shirley both of Elm Creek; grandchildren, Amber Montes of Columbus and Brandon Devroy and his wife, Ashley of Elm Creek; great-grandchildren: Alicia, Jessica and Diana Montes and Taylor and Dawn Devroy; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, 6 brothers and 4 sisters.
