Helen’s Obituary Helen Virginia Spencer, of Knob Noster, Missouri passed away August 14, 2018, after spending three loving years with her son Frederick D. Spencer, his wife Monika, her granddaughters Maika Dominique and Sonja Helen, and her great-granddaughter Alice Marianne. Helen was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Wesley Jr. (died August 28, 1997), eldest son John Wesley IV (died December 5, 1976), and Ivan Karl (died June 9, 2011). She is survived by her son, Frederick Douglas Spencer.

Helen was born September 10, 1929, in St. Louis, MO the daughter of Andrew and Corrine (Grant) Greer. Helen was married to John Wesley Spencer Jr. on February 6, 1951. She had various employments as a candy striper and nurses assistant while her sons were small.

She also worked for the military as a civilian employee for many years until she retired. Shiloh Baptist Church of Warrensburg is where she spent every Sunday until her health declined to a point where she could not make the trip. Reverend Robert Moore spent many selfless hours ensuring Mother Spencer was taken care of in her home at 604 South Washington in Knob Noster and communicating with Frederick about her health and status.

She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and remained a loyal member even past her retirement. Helen had many life-long friends who lived in Knob Noster, Warrensburg, and Sedalia. Her best friend was Barbara Bratton, and they were like two peas in a pod for years.

Alas, Helen’s health declined until she was brought to live with her remaining son and his family in San Antonio, Texas where she resided and was loved for the last 3 years of her life. She was surrounded by her immediate family as she went to greet her Savior. She will be dearly missed by her family, her friends, and the community.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Warrensburg Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In Helen’s honor, please consider making a contribution to her longtime church, Shiloh Baptist Church of Warrensburg.
