Obituary of Herbert Simmons Herbert E. “Gene” Simmons, 90, a lifelong Red Hook area resident, passed away on Monday, June 25th, 2018 at the Renaissance Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center in Staatsburg, NY. Born on August 30th, 1927, in Madalin, NY, he was the son of the late Edward and Mabel (Overbaugh) Simmons. Gene married Gloria R. Ritter on Feb.

18, 1951 at Trinity Church in Tivoli and she survives at home in Red Hook. Gene served as a Tech Sergeant in the US Army during WWII and went on to serve in the Reserves as a Master Sergeant Gene worked for over 34 years as engineer with IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY, having retired in 1990. He was a member of their ¼-Century Club.

Gene was a life member of Hendrick Hudson Lodge #875 Free & Accepted Masons, the Red Hook Fire Company, and the Harris Smith Post 524 American Legion in Tivoli, NY. He also was a former parishioner at the United Methodist Church of Red Hook He is survived by his wife Gloria R. Simmons of Red Hook, NY; a niece, Laura (Philip) Pflum of Myrtle Beach, SC; his nephews, Richard (Grace) Simmons of Marlboro, NY, James Simmons of Tivoli, NY, and Paul Simmons of Tivoli, NY; along with numerous extended family and friends. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his siblings, Elizabeth Abney, Laura Rhodes, Howard, Richard, and Edward Simmons.

Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes on Thursday, June 28th, 2018 from 4 to 7 pm. Hendrick Hudson Lodge #875 Free & Accepted Masons will conduct services at 7 pm & Harris Smith Post 524 American Legion will conduct services at 7: 15 pm. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 29th, 2018 at Burnett & White Funeral Homes, Red Hook, NY.

Rev. Nikki Edleman will officiate. Burial with military honors will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Red Hook.

Memorial donations may be made in Herbert’s memory to the Dutchess County SPCA, 636 Violet Ave. , Hyde Park, NY 12538. Arrangements are under the direction of Burnett & White Funeral Homes 7461 S. Broadway, Red Hook, NY.
