Herman Smith September 05, 1926 – February 12, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Herman Smith, 92, of rural Columbia City, died at 5:20 a.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at Miller’s at Oak Pointe where he had been a resident since 2014. He was born September 5, 1926 in Putnam County, Tennessee, a son of the late Ernest and Jossie (Crooke) Smith. His formative years were spent in Cookeville, TN.

On June 26, 1945 he was united in marriage to Virginia Ruth Cherry. Since 2005, the couple has lived in the Columbia City area. Virginia died November 23, 2014.

He worked for LML Corporation, Columbia City for 25 years as a machine operator. A life-long farmer-for-hire, he worked with farming operations throughout the area. He was a former member of the South Whitley Family of God Church, South Whitley.

Through his life, he enjoyed fishing in all the seasons. He is survived by his children, Penny (Duane) Squier, New Haven and Herman Darrel Smith, Pierceton; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and a brother, Ernest Smith, Jr., Cookeville, TN. Additionally, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Melinda Fancil; sisters, Sue Goodman, Flossie Culver, Dorothy Thorp, twin infant siblings, Ailene & Cleo Smith and brothers, Ben & Aaron Smith.

The funeral service is 2 p.m. Friday at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial is at the South Park Annex Cemetery. Visitation is 12 noon Friday until the service at the funeral home.

Memorials are to final expenses c/o Smith & Sons Funeral Home.
