Obituary for Howard Dudley Purvis Howard Dudley Purvis of Marshall, Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 19, 2018. He was 88 years old. Howard was born on March 10, 1930 in Coleman, Texas to Tommie and Ella J. (Sue) Purvis.

He attended public schools in Coleman, and upon graduation, attended junior college in San Angelo, Texas. He then attended the University of Texas in Austin and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and earned his certified public accountant designation. In 1953, he married the love of his life, Betty Jean Ceder, and together they had two sons, Dwight and Keith Purvis.

Howard worked for the Lower Colorado River Authority before moving to Dallas, Texas in 1953 to work for Alford, Meroney and Company, CPAs. In 1961, the family moved to Jacksonville, Texas where Howard worked as the Controller for the Bearden Furniture Company which owned a chain of retail furniture stores in East Texas. In 1964, the family moved to Odessa, Texas where Howard returned to Alford, Meroney and Company, as a partner in charge of the West Texas regional office and took the company through a merger with Ernst & Young and Company, CPAs.

After retiring from Ernst & Young many years later, Howard then served on the Board of Directors at First Savings & Loan and worked as controller before opening his own private CPA firm. Upon his second retirement, Howard and Betty moved to Marshall in 2007 to be closer to their sons and grandchildren. Howard was active for 33 years in the U.S. Naval Reserve serving in the Dallas, East and West Texas offices.

He was a longtime member of the Odessa Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow; served as President of the Permian Basin Chapter of Texas Society of CPAs; served as President of the Midland-Odessa Symphony Board of Directors; served on the Ector County ISD School Board; served as Treasurer for the Odessa Pro Am Golf Tournament, and served many years as Treasurer for the Permian High School Band Boosters. Howard and Betty were longtime members of First United Methodist Church, Odessa where he served on the Board of Trustees, as Finance committee chair, as Sunday School teacher, as a longtime usher and, on the Boy Scout Troop Committee. In 1998, he was honored as the recipient of the Community Service Award from the Heritage of Odessa Foundation.

Howard loved to hunt, fish, play golf and spend time with family and friends. Howard is preceded in death by his parents, Tommie and Sue Purvis of San Angelo, Texas and by his brother James Purvis of Midland, Texas. Howard will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 64 years, Betty Jean Purvis; by his sons, Dwight Purvis of Joshua, Texas; Keith Purvis and wife Pam Purvis of Marshall, Texas; by his beloved grandsons, Vincent Purvis and wife Lara of Longview, Texas, Adam Purvis of Joshua, Alexander Purvis, wife Samantha, and great grand-daughter Lily Purvis all of Marshall, Nathaniel Purvis of Marshall and by his sister-in-law Margaret Purvis of Midland, Texas plus numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation service will be held Friday, April 27 at Meadowbrook Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral will be held Saturday, April 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, Marshall. Interment will follow at Algoma North Cemetery. The service will be officiated by Rev.

Rodger Garbs and Rev. Harold Coburn. Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, Marshall or charityof choice.
