Obituary for Miriam Amelia (Goldberg) Palmer Beloved wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother, Miriam Amelia (Goldberg) Palmer, age 92, passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2018 in Marshall, Texas with her family by her side. Amelia was born in Harrison County, Texas on March 22, 1926 to Nathan David and Mary Love (Scott) Goldberg in the same home where her mother was born. She is preceded in death by her parents, Nathan and Mary Love Goldberg.
Amelia is survived by the love of her life, her husband of 68 years, William Franklin (Bill) Palmer; her son, William David Palmer and his wife, Donice Lane Palmer; her daughter, Patty Scott Palmer Huddleston and her husband, William J. “Bill” Huddleston; and her only grandchild, whom she adored, William Trent Palmer. Amelia was always active in many Marshall organizations, working to improve the quality of life in Marshall, including Marshall Symphony League, Marshall Historical Society, Republican Women, loved playing bridge with her friends and the couple’s supper club she and Bill had been involved in for over 55 years. She was very instrumental in getting fluoride added to the water in Marshall many years ago, was a member of the UDC, Hospital Pink Ladies and during WWII, Amelia worked with various USO programs, meeting troop trains and dispensing sandwiches, cold drinks and snacks to the troops who were traveling.
She attended Marshall Public Schools, graduating with the Marshall High School Class of 1943. She attended Texas State College for Women for a brief time, then went on to study at Centenary College in Shreveport. She later worked as office manager for Blue Buckle Jeans and as secretary for Oscar B. Jones, City Manager.
Amelia was confirmed in 1939 at First United Methodist Church in Marshall and she and Bill were members of the Gleaners/Asbury Sunday School Class for many years. Amelia’s life was well lived and she was well loved by all who were blessed by her friendship. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Visitation for Amelia will be held at First United Methodist Church on Friday, June 8, 2018 from 12:00pm to 1:30pm. Funeral Service will be held at First United Methodist Church on Friday, June 8, 2018 at 1:30pm with Rev. Rodger Garbs officiating.
