Obituary for James William Tipton James William “J.W.” Tipton, 78, of Fort Payne, passed away Monday, November 5, 2018 at his home. He was born November 17, 1939 to the late William Henry and Margie Iola McSpadden Tipton. He was a welder and pipe fitter by trade.

Mr. Tipton retired from the National Guard in 1999 as Sergeant Major and was a member of the 20th Special Forces Society. He was also a member of the local VFW and the 656 Boilermakers. Graveside services will be 12 noon Thursday, November 8th at Glenwood Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 10 a.m. until the 12 noon hour of service at the funeral home. He is survived by his wife, Carol King Tipton; daughters, Sharon Gothard and husband, Sandy and Joan Collins; sisters, Catherine Turner and Myrtle Cordell and husband, Jim; grandchildren, Blake Medley and wife, Jessica, Katy Gothard, Xander Gothard, and Windsor Gothard; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Savannah Medley; chosen grandson, Caleb Stalvey; chosen family, Scott and Robin Stalvey; and many nieces, nephews, and special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Frances Long and husband, Claude, Margie Thomas and husband, Wayne, Bessie Hickey and husband, Johnny, Dora Ogle and husband, Melvin; Adelle Barksdale and husband, Billy; and brother-in-law, James Turner.
