John Aloysious Clark, 87, of Hillsboro, IL, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2018, at 1:10 p.m. at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield, IL. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2018, from 9-11 a.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home, Hillsboro, IL. Service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Father Daniel Willenborg, Pastor of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Hillsboro, IL will officiate. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Nokomis, IL, at a later date. Mr. Clark was born on March 4, 1931, in Stonington, IL to the late James W. and Bertha A. (Howard) Clark.
He attended Morrisonville Schools, in Morrisonville, IL and retired as a farmer, carpenter, gas hauler, and worked for the Paris Locker Plant. Mr. Clark lived in Stonington, IL, Morrisonville, IL, and Atwater, IL, before he moved to Hillsboro, IL. He married Lula Mae Herpstreith on May 7, 1955 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Nokomis, IL.
Mr. Clark was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, and a former member of St. John’s Catholic Church in which he served as a trustee, and helped with Food Bank Meals on Wheels. He was in the U.S. Marines Corp. during the Korean War as a Forward Observer.
John served as Commander, and Commander of Color Guard for twelve years for the V.F.W. Post 1306. He also served as Commander for six years for the American Legion Post 425, Irving, IL. Mr. Clark was on the board for the Montgomery County Farmers Institute, and was a director of Montgomery County Farm Bureau from 1974-1980.
He was also the director of Montgomery Service Company (F.S.), and a member of the Veteran’s Assistance Commission from 2001-2018. Mr. Clark was awarded the Studs Terkel Award in 2004 for volunteerism. While he was Commander of the Color Guard, they were awarded the Service to Mankind Award in 2013.
Mr. Clark is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Lula Clark, Hillsboro, IL; one daughter, Joni A. Milner of Deerfield, IN; three grandchildren, Franz Milner, Royerton, IN; John Milner, Midland, TX; and Dana (Husband, James) Cordrey, Winchester, IN; two great grandchildren, Kameron Milner, Royerton, IN; and Madalyn Milner, Myrtle Beach, SC, two brothers Joe clark & Bernard Clark and four sisters, Monica Grant, Margaret Latimer, Lenora Spencer & Rose Ann Lockwood. Along with his parents, Mr. Clark was also preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters, and his son-in-law, Michael Milner. Memorials may be given to V.F.W. Post 1306 & American Legion Post 425 Color Guard, and St. Agnes Catholic Church in Hillsboro, IL.
