He was born on April 6, 1947, in Lexington, SC, to the late Clarence and Kathleen Gates Metz. He was a retired mechanic and a member of Earlewood Baptist Church in Columbia, SC.

John is survived by a daughter, Kathy Muller; two sisters, Miriam Backman and Melba Metts; four brothers, Fred, Rex, Ernie and Donald Metz; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
