Obituary for John Anthony Shubitz John Anthony Shubitz, age 80, of Waukegan, Illinois, passed away on September 7, 2018. Born on July 29, 1938, in Duluth, Minnesota, to Slovenian immigrant parents Thomas and Mary Subic (which became Shubitz at Ellis Island), John was the seventh of eight children born in the Shubitz family. His death was caused by complications from Parkinson’s disease.

John is survived by his wife, Rita (Latini) Shubitz; sons Mark (Jenny Vasquez) and Steven; and grandsons Jonathan and Matthew. John is also survived by two sisters, Genevieve Shubitz and Dorothy Janchar, and by numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul (Ann), Tom (Elaine), and Jim (Lynn); and by two sisters, Mary (John) Glamuzina and Emma (Cameron) Himebaugh.

After receiving degrees in philosophy and theology from St. Paul Seminary, John initially worked at the Diocese of Duluth and taught at Duluth Cathedral High School. Upon completing a master’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Superior, John spent almost 30 years as a high school guidance counselor at Waukegan East High School, and later at Waukegan High School. He also oversaw Waukegan’s Night School Program for many years, as he was passionate about helping people obtain their education.

John enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, reading, swimming, cross-country skiing, and taking road trips to visit relatives and new places. At home, he enjoyed watching storms pass through the sky and watching all of his favorite Chicago sports teams on television with family and friends. Funeral services will be celebrated on Friday, September 14, 2018, at St. Dismas Church in Waukegan, Illinois.

Visitation starts at 8:00 AM, followed by mass at 10:00 AM. Interment will be at Ascension Catholic Cemetery in Libertyville, Illinois. Arrangements are under the care of Peterson & Patch Funeral Home, for more information please call, (847) 623-0495.
