John Donald Ritchie, age 88, of Woodsboro, MD, died Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at Gettysburg Hospital. Born February 19, 1930 in Lonaconing, MD, he was the son of the late David W. and Minta C. Dawson Ritchie. He was the husband of Mary A. Winkler Ritchie, his wife of 67 years.

Mr. Ritchie was a 1948 graduate of Central High School, Lonaconing and immediately joined the Air Force. He was in San Antonio, TX for basic training, then served at the Pentagon for 14 years, went on a tour of duty… Read More » in Izmar, Turkey, then worked as a recruiter in Frederick and Hagerstown, retiring in 1968. Following retirement he became an underwriter for State Farm Insurance, retiring a second time in 1995.

Twenty years ago, he was instrumental in starting a State Farm retiree luncheon, meeting quarterly. He continued through this past September. John was an active member of Grace Rocky Hill Lutheran Church, Woodsboro, where he served as assistant pastor, a council member, sang with the choir, and oversaw the strawberry festivals.

He was a member of the Glenn W. Eyler Post American Legion, Woodsboro and sang with the Seaboard Singers for 15 years, singing in nursing homes, schools, etc. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and dancing, and was known as a gentleman farmer. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children and spouses, Scott Douglas and Donna J. Ritchie of Keymar, Kathryn Lynn Duvall Rogers and Clayton G. Rogers of Thurmont; grandchildren, Darrell and Weston Ritchie, John M., Clayton and Angela Dawn Duvall; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Josie, Cash, Magnus and Minta; and brother, David Lee Ritchie and wife Eleanor of Lonaconing.

He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Rhonda Jean Ritchie. The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro on Sunday, June 10 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Rocky Hill Lutheran Church, 10825 Coppermine Road, Woodsboro on Monday, June 11 at 11 a.m. Rev. Matthew Beers, church pastor, and Rev.

Gordon Narvesen, former pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in Rocky Hill Cemetery.
