Obituary for John Robert Pendell Pendell, John Robert Devoted husband, father, and grandfather; passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 17, 2018, in Sylvania, OH, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 80 years old. John was born on December 11, 1937, in Saginaw, MI, to parents Arthur and Doris (Bullock) Pendell.

He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1955. After moving to Detroit to attend college at the University of Detroit, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling, he then spent 30 years as a middle school guidance counselor in the Detroit Public Schools system. After marrying Judith (Lamb) and starting a family, he spent his adult life first in Livonia and then in Brighton.

John was an avid softball player and golfer, as well as a great fan of University of Michigan football, the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings, and sports in general. He loved to support his children’s and then his grandchildren’s activities, attending their games and performances all the way through his last years. He was known to all his grandchildren as Poppy.

They loved to spend time with him and will miss him greatly. John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judith, his daughters Jane (Brad) Pfeifer and Julie Pendell, and his sons John Jr. (Vickie Larsen) and Jeff (Natalie), as well as grandchildren John Henry (“Jack”), Ben, Adam and Matthew Pfeifer; John Charles (“Charlie”) and Nolan Pendell; Edith and Frances Pendell; and Carlin and Annika Pendell. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Peter and Patricia.

Visitation will be at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Brighton from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, with a Mass on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Visitation at the church begins at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. A luncheon at St. Patrick will follow the Mass. Memorial contributions are suggested to Catholic Charities of Livingston County.
