John Ward, age 88, of Johnson City, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 22, 2019 from the Hillview Health Center in Elizabethton. John was born in Washington County, Tennessee to the late John Garfield and Beulah Presnell Ward. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step daughter, Betty Ann Hughes.

John was a man of God and a great father and husband. He was always a happy, humble man that loved his God, his country and his family. John was a United States Marine veteran, having served his country proudly in the Korean War.

He had worked as a maintenance supervisor and was a member of Southside Free Will Baptist Church, where he had served as a Sunday School teacher. John always enjoyed sending Bible verses to his family, friends and church family. Those left to cherish his wonderful memories include his loving and devoted wife of thirty three years, Vella Mae Ward, of the home; two daughters, Karen Marie Ingram and Donna Kay Ward, both of Elizabethton; a son, Terry Lynn Ward and his wife Shelia, of Elizabethton; two sisters, Irena Hanna and Martha Ann Whaley and husband Paul, both of Johnson City; his grandchildren, Bridgett Renee Whitehead and husband Gordon, Whitney Good and husband Brad and Brandon Ingram; three great grandchildren, Tuesday Marie Ingram, Anastasia Ingram and Eowyn Ingram; and a soon-to-be great grandson, Daxton Good.

Several nieces and nephews also survive. A service to celebrate the life of John Ward will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Monday, March 25, 2019 in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Reverend Steve Burleson, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Monday.

Friends and family may also call at other times at his daughter’s house at 120 Hamilton Road, Elizabethton, TN. The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at the Washington County Memory Gardens. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 AM on Tuesday. Pallbearers will be Brandon Ingram, Brad Good, Larry Lane, Gordon Whitehead, Jared Reece and Jeremy Burleson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Billy John Presnell, Ronnie Barnes, Paul Richardson and Paul Whaley.
