Kathryn Metha Hampton Scott was born on August 20, 1927, to Myrtle Neid and Myron James Hampton in Victoria, Texas. Metha was later joined by brother, Harold N. Hampton, who she remained close to until her death.
Metha grew up during the depression and lived the saying ” if you can’t eat, wear, or use it, you don’t need it”. . Metha shared with her children how her family stuffed mattresses with straw and lived in the attic of their home so the downstairs could be rented out for extra money.
In 1942 she met the love of her life James E. Scott, on a blind date. They ate dinner then spent the evening walking in the beautiful square in downtown Victoria, Texas. J. E. Scott was in the Army Air Corps and was stationed at Randolph Air Base in Victoria.
They were married on June 30, 1942 and spent 60 years walking together. When J.E was stationed in Harlingen, Texas, Metha began her retail career by working at Sears and Roebuck. She loved it.
When J.E. retired in 1960 the family moved to The Arch Community, to be close to family living there. Metha worked at Carletti Grocery, then began working at the Grand Leader where she worked until they closed. Metha then worked as a substitute teacher for the Hartshorne School District.
It was her favorite job. She loved all the kids, encouraging them to call her “Nanny”. It really tickled her when one of them would stop her and call her Nanny and give her a hug.
Cooking was one of Metha’s joys. Most recipes were her own and memorized. She was known for her delicious chocolate pies and sent many to bake sales.
She was a talented seamstress enjoying it until her eyes became weak. Metha was Christian woman and was a member of The Church of Christ in Haleyville. Surviving Metha is her son James E.
