Kristy Marie (Maki) Wirkula died Wednesday July 11, 2018 following a long battle with cancer. Kristy was born January 13, 1962 in Hancock Michigan. Kristy resided in Copper Harbor for over 10 years and worked at the Mariner North for several years.

She later moved to Sands Township and has worked at the Crossroads Bar & Restaurant for the past 26 years. She loved her job waitressing and had several special customers; she had a great family at the bar. Kristy was an avid reader and also enjoyed having lots of plants. She liked to attend the auto races at the Sands Speedway and some NASCAR races. Kristy was preceded in death by her father Sherwood “Muck” Maki and mother Mary Lou (Priestap) Maki.

Kristy is survived by her husband Ken Wirkula; daughters, Lindsay (Roger) Ackerman of Lansing and Cheyenne Wirkula of Sands Township; three brothers and a sister, Bradley Maki of Las Vegas, Stuart Maki of Sands Township, Jon-Paul Maki of Leesburg, Virginia, Kimberly (Dean) Wolter of Hancock; nephew, Todd Maki of Marquette, niece Jourdan (Andrew) Quinn of Arkansas, nephews, Jeremy and Jacob Wolter of Hancock and niece, Jenni Wolter of Hancock; mother-in-law, Anita (Jack) Heaton, Sands Township; brother-in-law, Darryl (Kathy) Wirkula of Sands Township and their three children, Cory, Andrea and Whitney. A celebration of Kristy’s life will be celebrated on Sunday, August 5, 2018 from 2-8pm at the Crossroads.
