Larry “Doodie” William Gordon, Sr., 71, of Oakland, MD, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, November 24, 2018, after spending the day hunting with his son. Born September 18, 1947, in Bayard, WV, he was the son Mary (Neel) Gordon, Oakland, and the late James Gordon. He was also preceded in death by beloved wife, Nancy Sarah Gordon, and his sister, Diane “Annie” Bittinger.

Larry served in the U.S. Army and was a proud Vietnam Veteran. He was a member of American Legion, Proctor-Kildow Post 71, and Deer Park VFW Post 10077. He worked for the local Carpenter’s Union #1024, retiring after years of service at Carl Belt.

He was a member of Fairview Church of the Brethren, Oakland. Larry was a loving, gentle soul and an exceptional man. He gave freely and helped everyone.

One of his greatest joys was being a “Pappy” grandfather, and was adored by each of his grandchildren. He was a father-in-law who loved his daughters-in-law like they were his own. Larry was a friend who could always be counted on to lend a helping hand.

But, most of all, he was a dad that taught his children the meaning of hard work, honesty, loyalty, and to always help a friend. His children were his pride and joy and he couldn’t have been more proud of each one. Larry enjoyed buggy riding, looking for deer and loved and enjoyed life each and every day.

Larry is survived by three sons, Tim Gordon and wife, Denise; Jeremy Gordon and wife, Becky; Larry “J.R.” Gordon, Jr. and wife, Kim; one daughter, Crystal Gordon; two brothers, Jim Gordon and wife, Tammy; Charles Gordon and wife, Louise; one brother-in-law, Roger Bittinger; seven grandchildren, Blake, Tyler, Lilly, Tucker, Gisella, Giovanni, Lorelei; and one dear cousin and friend, Ruff Neel. Friends will be received at Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 1100 Memorial Drive, Oakland, MD 21550, on Tuesday, from 2-4:00 p.m. and 7-9:00 pm. Services will be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at Fairview Church of the Brethren, 1101 Fairview Church Road, Oakland, MD 21550 with Pastor Samuel Moon officiating.
