Mr. LaVaughn Lewis “Bull” Bowers, age 88, passed away January 21, 2019. Mr. Bowers was born in Dekalb County on May 7, 1930 to the late Arzena and John Bowers. After graduating from Dekalb County high School in 1949, Mr. Bowers enlisted in the United States Navy where he served on two aircraft carriers during the Korean War.

He then returned to Fort Payne and soon opened Bowers Barber Shop located on First Street. In 1977, he went to work for Merico Bakery where he served for 17 years primarily as a lead man of a crew until he retired. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Fort Payne.

Mr. Bowers loved supporting Fort Payne athletic events. From coaching little league baseball to helping to build baseball fields, to attending many games in every sport, he loved helping kids and he loved the Wildcats! Mr. and Mrs. Bowers moved from Fort Payne to Regency Assisted Living Facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 2013 to be closer to family.

After the passing of his wife, Mr. Bowers moved to Tut Fann VA Home in Huntsville, where he was living when he passed away. Funeral services will be 1:00pm Saturday, January 26th, at the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Pat McFadden and Rev. Keith Pugh officiating.

Burial will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 11:00am until the 1:00pm hour of service at the funeral home. Mr. Bowers is survived by his children, Donna Lee and Lanny Holbrook, Kent and Victoria Bowers, and Glenn and Teresa Bowers; grandchildren, Kristy and David Filmore, Misty and Eddie Mosley, Paul and Eunice Bowers, Julia and Samuel Presson, Hannah Bowers, and Brett Bowers; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren that he loved and was very proud of.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Lee “Ned” Bowers and parents, John Lewis and Arzena Haas Bowers. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of LaVaughn “Bull” Bowers please visit our Sympathy Store.
