Leon Carr Watkins February 24, 1934 – December 15, 2018 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Sympathy Card Leon Carr Watkins, 84, formerly of Danville, VA, passed away on Saturday, December 15, 2018 in Windermere, FL. Born February 24, 1934 in Danville, VA, he was the son of the late Benjamin O. Watkins, Sr. and Deerah Beavers Watkins. He was married to Mary “Kit” Downing Watkins, who survives.

Leon was a Civil Rights Icon in the aviation industry who forged the path for minorities in entrepreneurship. As an Assistant Administrator for Civil Rights in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), he knew the importance of diversity in the workplace and spent his career opening doors so that women and minorities could have a seat at the table. Leon was a graduate of John M. Langston High School in 1952, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Pyschology from Johnson C. Smith University in North Carolina in 1957.

He also earned his Master of Arts degree in Government from George Washington University in Washington, DC in 1952 during the dawn of the Civil Rights movement. He did further studies in Yale University. In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Kimberly Watkins and Lesslee Cornelius; two step-daughters, Regina Thomas and Jean Barnett; one step-son, Michael Cornelius; one granddaughter, Demisha White; two grandsons, George Thomas and Jamison Hatton; one sister, Consuelo Harris; one brother, Benjamin Watkins II (Shirley); nieces and nephews, Kevin Harris, Sheryl Wilbon, Megan Harris, Richard Harris and Benjamin Watkins III and a host of other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 25, 2018 at 11 AM from Holbrook Street Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is assisting the Watkins family.
