Lewis Turner Payne, 94, of Jamestown, NY passed away on Friday, March 15, 2019 at Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 6, 1925 in Toomsboro, GA, the son of the late Oscar Whipple and Leila Cornelius Payne. Lewis was raised by his uncle Joe Payne Sr. and his aunt Evetta Payne (both deceased).

Lewis was an active member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church, where he also served as a Deacon. He and his wife were also foster parents. Lewis operated the refuse collector business since 1964 and worked at Jamestown Malleable Iron for 36 years.

He enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening, landscaping and some hunting. He liked to barbeque with his homemade secret sauce. Lewis enjoyed socializing and going to the local coffee spots to visit with others.

Lewis loved dogs, especially his last dog Bailey. Lewis and his wife Margaret were caring and compassionate people. They would go to Super Duper Grocery Store years ago and gather the food near the expiration date.

They would then package it up and share it with their neighborhood. Lewis is survived by six daughters, Essie Jean (Eddie) Jones of Bemus Point, N.Y., Gloria (Clive) Clarke of Waterbury, CT, Patricia Payne of Forest Hill, NY, Penelope Payne of Jamestown, NY, Valerie (Terry) Lowther of Buffalo, NY and Tara (Charlie) Darling of Jamestown, NY; three sons: Gregory L. Payne of Jamestown, NY, Anthony Payne of Bemus Point, NY and Jeffrey Payne of Jamestown, NY, several grandchildren and great grandchildren: Quincy Leeper, Malik Leeper, Chad Jones, Shawn Jones, Vincent Jones, Alicia (Peter) Lepiane, Tyleeia Lowther, Tisha, Danielle, Alyssa, Jeffery and Isaiah Payne, Sloane and Warrick Darling; a brother: Willie V. Harvell and a sister: Recile Bledsoe; cousins who were raised together in the same house: Joe Payne Jr., Jenell Fickling, Louree Bell, Calvin Payne, Mary O’Neal and Darlene Maddox In addition to his parents, Lewis is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret L. Payne, whom he married on December 6, 1946 and who died on March 18, 2015, a grandson: Deresse Leeper; a daughter-in-law: Sondra Payne; a sister: Teresa Underwood; grandparents: Tom and Leila Payne; cousins who were raised together in the same house: Martha Williams, Daniel Lee Payne and Leila Payne. Friends may call at Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home, 316 East Fifth Street, Jamestown, NY on Friday from 6-8 PM.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 53 West 23rd Street, Jamestown, NY at 10 AM. The Rev. LeRoy Walker will officiate.
