Lillian Gertrude Stith Lamkin, affectionately known as “Tootsie” to family and friends, departed from this life to enter eternity with her Lord Jesus on January 18, 2019. She was born July 19, 1925 in Guston, KY, the eldest child of Harold and Beatrice Ruby Stith. She was a graduate of Meade County High School in Brandenburg, KY and after graduation worked for the US Army at Ft.
Knox Army Post for almost two years before marrying Howard Lamkin of Ekron, KY in 1944. They lived on their family farm for forty-four years where they raised their two sons, Howard, Jr. and Thomas Elwood. After selling the farm they moved to Evansville, IN to live closer to their older son.
Lillian was predeceased by her parents, her husband, an infant brother, and one sister Patsy Fitzgerald Hildebrand. She is survived by one sister Jane Stith Kramer, who lives in northern IL, her two sons Howard Jr. of Evansville IN and Thomas of Carthage NC, five grandsons, two great grandchildren and four step great grandchildren. In the local school she was involved not only through the Parent-Teacher Association but also as a substitute teacher in the classroom. On the family farm she guaranteed her family always had plenty to eat in a home that was filled with love. She was the primary worker in the large family garden though she rarely was in the fields seeing that area as the responsibility of the men in the family.
She created a climate in the home that made it a retreat for extended family members and friends and also for the student pastors and their families who led Ekron Baptist Church where she and her family attended. She was a of strength for many both within the family and in the general community. Her memory will live on in the story of her life and the work she did in developing a genealogical history of the Lamkin family, one of her most beloved hobbies.
