Obituary for Lois H. McLain “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies”. Proverbs 31:10 Lois McLain, 96, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 22, 2018, at her home.
At the time of her death, Lois was the oldest living member of the Surgoinsville First Baptist Church, where she was a member for over 60 years. She was saved at a young age and loved her church and Lord and Savior. Lois was born and grew up in the Eidson Community of Hawkins County.
When her husband to be, Chester McLain, was deployed to France in WWII, she traveled by foot to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to volunteer for the Department of Defense. She then traveled to Washington, DC, where she worked as a clerk in the ship building yards. She later transferred to the Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Kingsport where she was recognized as the first woman to buy a war bond to support her country during the war.
She retired from Alladin Plastics in 1982. Lois was a talented seamstress, winning several ribbons for her quilts. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and neighbors.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Chester McLain; parents, Joseph and Ilene Horton; brothers, Emery and Curtis Horton; sisters, Artie Mae and Goldie Horton and Helen Lawson. She is survived by her special nephew, Perry Dykes and his wife Regina; very special nieces, Hayden and Riley Dykes; special cousin, Reece Bailey and his wife Anna (Sis); and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept.
142, Memphis, TN 38148. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Christian-Sells Funeral Home in Rogersville. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 pm with Rev.
